OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST–the biggest metal festival in North America EVER–will celebrate two historic moments in the festival headliners’ careers with one-day sales on Saturday, August 20 (Ozzfest) and Friday, August 26 (Knotfest).
First up, this Saturday, August 20, for 20 hours (from 4:00 AM-12 midnight, PT), a single day GA OZZFEST ticket will be available for $20 in honor of the festival’s 20th anniversary.  Created as a two-day event in 1996 by Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, OZZFEST was the first national music festival of its kind dedicated to hard rock music and breaking new artists.  In the years that followed, it became one of the most successful touring packages in music history.
“It’s just unbelievable to me that it’s been 20 years since the first Ozzfest,” says Ozzy Osbourne. “We’re really looking forward to bringing Ozzfest back to its birthplace in San Bernardino.”
And…to honor the 15th anniversary of the release of Slipknot‘s Grammy-nominated and critically acclaimed album IOWA, KNOTFEST is offering a special $15 GA Ticket for 15 hours on Friday, August 26.  The special $15 (plus fees) for 15 hours–which celebrates the album Rolling Stone said makes “nearly everything else in modern doom rock sounds banal'”–will take place Friday August 26th from 9:00 AM-11:59PM (PT).
The Live Nation-produced OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST is set for Saturday, September 24 (OZZFEST) and Sunday, September 25 (KNOTFEST) at San Manuel Amphitheater and Festival Grounds in San Bernardino, CA.  Updated line-ups for OZZFEST MEETS KNOTFEST, along with details on all ticketing and camping options can be found at OZZFEST.COM and KNOTFEST.COM.

OZZFEST JAPAN With Headlining Performances From Ozzy Osbourne, Korn & Friends NOVEMBER 21 AND 22

–the first major international music festival to ever travel to Japan–will return to Makuhari Messe arena (just outside of Tokyo) Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22.  The two-day festival will feature headlining performances from two OZZFEST veterans: festival namesake Ozzy Osbourne (who will perform as Ozzy & Friends) and Korn.  Evanescence is the first additional act to be announced for a festival bill that will include more than 22 performers.  OZZFEST JAPAN–a collaboration between Sharon Osbourne and Japanese promoter Hayashi International Promotion (H.I.P.)–debuted in May 2013 to sold-out crowds of 20,000 per day and wide critical acclaim.

Ozzy’s OZZFEST JAPAN performance is one of six shows the multi-platinum, three-time Grammy® winning singer and songwriter has scheduled this year.  Korn’s appearance is a highlight of the band’s 20th anniversary celebration.  Evanescence will both make their OZZFEST debut at OZZFEST JAPAN, in their only performance of 2015.  The remaining acts on the OZZFEST JAPAN lineup will be revealed later this year.  Organizers say fans can expect performances from a dynamic mix of international and domestic bands, all of which will reinforce OZZFEST JAPAN as the leader in the Japanese rock festival market.

Ozzy Osbourne has sold more than 120 million albums worldwide.  Osbourne‘s career has spanned more than four decades (as both a successful solo artist and as the lead singer of Black Sabbath) and his music is as relevant today as ever, still being heard daily on TV, in movies, on radio and at stadium sports events. This year will mark 20 years since Osbourne created his name-sake hard-rock/metal touring festival, OZZFEST, which had a hugely successful 14 year run across North America and the U.K.

Korn built an immortal bond in 1993 the first time Jonathan Davis, James “Munky” Shaffer, Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu, and Brian “Head” Welch decided to make music as a unit. They shed blood, sweat, and tears in the studio and on stage, fashioning an undeniable and unique sound that would permanently alter the course of rock music. After six seminal releases, two Grammy Awards, countless sold out shows, and selling 35 million albums worldwide, Head left the group in 2004 to face the demons of addiction. Korn soldiered on, adding drummer Ray Luzier in 2007 and releasing four more full-length releases. In 2012, a triumphant and tear-filled reunion happened on stage as the group headlined the Carolina Rebellion Festival with Head reprising his legendary part on “Blind.”  The initial bond came back into focus, and it was time for their eleventh studio album The Paradigm Shift, which seamlessly melds the group’s ever-present spirit of innovation with their signature metallic catharsis, paving the way for the future yet again.

In their more than 35-year history in Japan, promoter H.I.P. has worked with international superstars including AC/DC, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Taylor Swift, Guns N’ Roses, as well as Japanese powerhouse newcomers Momoiro Clover Z and internationally celebrated band One Ok Rock.  Most recently, H.I.P. partnered with Slipknot to launch their acclaimed music festival, Knotfest, in Japan, which drew sold out crowds each day.

OZZFEST JAPAN 2015 ticket prices are as follows: single-day general admission tickets are ¥15,000; single-day general admission tickets including a commemorative shirt are ¥18,000; weekend passes are ¥29,000; weekend passes including a commemorative t-shirt are ¥32,000.  All prices include consumption tax, box office commission and ticket printing fees.  The latest news on OZZFEST JAPAN can be found at www.ozzfestjapan.com.

Beginning in 1996, OZZFEST established itself as a virtual breeding ground for rising bands. It was cited as “one of rock’s biggest juggernauts” in the cover feature of Sunday’s New York Times’ “Arts & Leisure” section (6/25/06).  The festival has been instrumental in igniting the careers of platinum-selling artists like System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Incubus, Slipknot, Queens of the Stone Age, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold and Lamb of God, among others.  Other OZZFEST alumni–comprised of some of the top rock acts in the world–include Metallica, Foo Fighters, Motley Crue, Tool, Judas Priest, Pantera, Slash, Megadeth, Slayer and Iron Maiden. Beyond the inaugural OZZFEST JAPAN in 2013, other international stops for the acclaimed touring festival include the U.K. in 1998 and 2005.  In 2010, OZZFEST returned to the U.K. and debuted in Israel; the 2010 performances followed an August cross-country run of shows in the U.S.

Regarding the brand new celebration, Randy Rhoads Remembered, Tichy also went on to say, “When the opportunity arose to have the venue a 2nd night, I catered to the guitarist in me and went for a brand new show as my partner, Joe Sutton, and myself had talked of this while brainstorming ideas over the years. We decided to take the Bonzo Bash template and celebrate the music and wizardry of one of rock’s truly legendary guitar heroes; Randy Rhoads! Having grown up at a time when Randy took over the guitar world, he impacted me deeply. It seemed that a show in the Bonzo Bash mold would be perfect to celebrate all things Randy Rhoads!
With that said, in addition to the superb list of guitarists, I am psyched to announce some more of the world’s most brilliant players to RRR!!!; Marty Friedman, Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne / Firewind,) Mats Leven (vox- Candlemass / Yngwie Malmsteen,) Mitch Perry (Lita Ford / Edgar Winter,) former Randy Rhoads’ student Janet Robin (Precious Metal / Lindsey Buckingham / Air Supply,) Phil X (The Drills / Bon Jovi.) We have not yet begun to rock! We are not yet finished with these lineups! Plus, anything can change up to day of show… and usually does!!
I must also give a big thanks to photographer Jay Banbury! He has taken some of the most iconic
live photos of Randy Rhoads. Jay has graciously allowed us to use one for our concert poster and t-shirt! Go to Jay’s website and order up some killer Randy posters now! (www.139creative.com)
I can’t forget to also mention that our bud Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne / Billy Idol / Big Noize) has become an additional member of the RRR house band, “The Madmen.” Rudy Sarzo is on tour with Queensrcyhe up to rehearsal day, so Phil is helping out on a nice chunk of tunes!
We also have to tell everyone to go visit the ultimate Randy Rhoads Facebook page,“Randy Rhoads Society” (www.Facebook.com/RandyRhoadsSociety) These guys are hardcore!”

“Watching Randy at 10am in the Oakland coliseum was my 1st concert experience and it was life changing. It made me want to not only play guitar, but to perform with passion and emotion. I’m beyond honored to be part of this celebration of a true legend and an immense inspiration.”
~ Phil Demmel (Machine Head)

“As a kid I was a huge Sabbath fan, and was curious to see Ozzy`s solo band. I was lucky to see them on their first US tour at the Baltimore Civic Center. I had no idea who anyone in the band was. I couldn`t take my eyes off the charisma, excitement and overall coolness of the guitarist, Randy. He completely stole the show. I was just becoming a decent player myself back then, so seeing him really made me up my game. — At that time, Ozzy wasn`t the mainstream personality he is now, there was a shroud of darkness and even desperation around him and his departure from Sabbath at a time when Sabbath had all but fallen out of vogue. Randy was a beacon of light, literally lighting up the stage with his flashy guitar work and upbeat performance. I am convinced that he is a huge part of Ozzy`s longterm success. Tragically we lost him way too early. It`s nice to see that so many years later people have not forgotten the joy he brought to music, so it`s absolutely my pleasure to honor him by participating in Randy Rhoads Remembered concert.”
~ Marty Friedman

“Everybody knows that Randy Rhoads has been an inspiration to all generations of guitar players after him. But to me Randy was not only inspirational for his playing and writing skills, but for his attitude as well. I loved how low profile and humble of a person he was, always learning and moving forward. He was a servant of Music and that inspired me (and many others) on a whole different level. I’m truly honored to participate in RRR and celebrate Randy Rhoads’ life and music alongside these great musicians!”
~ Gus G. (Ozzy Osbourne / Firewind)

“Randy entered my soul like a lightning bolt and has remained there throughout my life.
He was like a magician but it was all real.”
~ Tracii Guns

“Randy is one of the most amazing virtuosos of all times. His unique, personal style and his fearless melodic approach caught my attention when I was discovering the electric guitar. I have spent many days in my teenager times trying to figure out how to play his awesome solos and riffs. I am excited and honored to be invited to join the incredible line-up of guitar players on “Randy Rhoads Remembered.” Each of us getting up on stage to pay tribute to a great guitar player that is a source of inspiration to generations of musicians.”
~ Kiko Loureiro (Angra)

“I am totally honored to be a part of “Randy Rhoads Remembered”. Randy was a great musician whose talents influenced a generation of guitarists as we will see by the stellar lineup of players I will be joining on January 25th. Knowing everyone involved with this show (and previously working with Brian Tichy and Joe Sutton on “The Bonzo Bash”) I know this is going to be a night we will all be proud to have been a part of…”
~ Mitch Perry (Lita Ford / Edgar Winter)

Throughout the history guitar playing, there have been the undisputed masters of different genres. When it comes to the the nineteen eighties sound of hard rock guitar, in my mind, the two colossi have to be Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. They did it better than the rest. Everyone has their corner and their mark of brilliance, but have to be, in my mind, relegated to ‘best of the rest.’ What I do, and so many others like me do, Randy wrote the book on, and showed us the way.
~ Rowan Robertson (Dio/ DC4)

“Randy’s approach to fusing classical music with heavy metal was so unique. I studied his playing like mad. Even his gear – I was reading all the magazines to see what he used, and I bought my first Marshall amp because that’s what he played through. Randy was definitely an early guitar hero of mine. He was unlike anybody around at the time. He played with such fire, grace and intelligence. Randy Rhoads’ playing still stuns me.”
~ Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses)

“I am so psyched to get this show together! Randy’s playing, and the music on those 2 Ozzy records were huge to me! I am a drummer but I also started putting a lot of time into guitar at the same time Randy came out. I heard Ozzy being interviewed on the radio when Blizzard Of Ozz was released. They played “I Don’t Know” and when the guitar kicked in I was floored and I was an instant fan! I spent countless hours trying to learn Randy’s songs, riffs and solos while I was also just a beginner on guitar. I tried to learn Randy’s live solo note for note! I had Randy’s posters on my basement walls! I still have those posters framed in my house right now! Brent Woods and I even shared a bottle of Randy Rhoads wine when it first came out!”
~ Brian TIchy (S.U.N.)

“31 years after the tragic death of my mentor and favorite guitar player, it’s time for a proper celebration of Randy’s legacy. Being involved with the Bonzo Bash since day one, I know Randy Rhoads Remembered will be a tribute unlike any other.”
~ Brent Woods (The Moby Dicks / Vince Neil)

“After school 1981. Drop the needle. ‘Blizzard Of Ozz’. WTF?!?! The guy who took the 6 in the pentatonic scale and made it minor instead of major so that ANYONE who plays it in sequence to this day is reminded of Randy Rhoads.
His heart, his soul, his choice of notes. His FIRE. That kind of inspiration stays with you ’til death. And now… 2014. Randy Rhoads Remembered. A bunch of as-inspired awesome musicians paying homage to this amazing guy who contributed SO MUCH to ROCK guitar. I am so excited to be a part of it. I CAN’T F@CKING WAIT!”

The Cult: Chris Wyse Interview

the cult

Chris Wyse’s is no stranger to rock music, although the name may not be on the tip of your tounge when bass playing is discussed, you’ve heard Chris playing with the likes Ozzy Osbourne, Mick Jagger, Scott Weiland , and countless others along with the band currently plays in The Cult, as well as his own band, Owl. Utilizing both electric upright bass and bass guitar, Wyse is a versatile cameleon whose style can adapt to any artist he is playing with which makes him one of the top bassists in music today. It’s no wonder Chris has played with some of the top musicians in rock and roll. Wyse’s latest release with Owl was realeasd earlier this year and he is currently on The Cult’s Electric 13 Tour.

I want to talk a little bit about your background as an artist The different styles and big name artists that you’ve played with is incredible! I’d love to know how the playing that you’ve done with other artists like Ozzy, Mick Jagger, Scott Wieland to just name a few, how that translated into The Cult and how you ended up in The Cult in the first okace.

Chris: Well, I was Bob Rock’s bass guy essentially. I met him first when I played with Tal Bachman on a big hit called She’s So High and on Nina Gordons Tonight is the Rest of My Life. At the time I was in another band with Paul D’Amour from Tool and Chris Pitman from Guns N’ Roses and they were going though some red tape at the time with their label. When the bassist of Tool calls you to do his new band you don’t say no! We were sort of the little brother band of Tool. Interestingly enough, it was Paul D’Amour, who bought me my electric stand up bass I’ve been known to use with Owl, the sun burst one. He was really wanted to play guitar on this project so I came in to play bass. That quickly fell apart, unfortunately. It was a great band and I didn’t know what to do next. Around that time someone told me to audition for Bachman. I had a producer friend who encouraged me actually and I got the gig right away and was flown off to Maui to meet Bob Rock! That’s how the whole beginning of my relationship Bob Rock started. I did Beyond Good and Evil (The Cults 2001 release) as a fill in bass player, their bass player was out right in the middle of their recording and pre-production and I just literally jumped in. Bob called me and said, “Can you come over tomorrow. I need you right away. Can you do it?” and I was like, “Yes.” That’s how I got the call … We started in LA pre-production and did part of the record at The Village in Santa Monica there we also did part of the pre-production in Hollywood and we did the rest of the record in Maui. At that time Matt Sorum was still on the drums (the drummer for The Cult is currently John Tempesta). That was supposed to be a temporary thing, I did some live shows with them but I didn’t continue to be in the band. I kind of jumped in and did that whole album and a few gigs on the tour but they continued to get a different live guy for the rest of the shows. What that whole experience did however was open a lot of doors for me because Bob called me for various other projects he was working on over the next few year, he’s called me quite a few things actually, the Metallica audition for example. All of these things just kind of happened to me pretty quickly, a lot of real solid musical connections, you know what I mean? It wasn’t really about trying to hustle. I just kind of put myself out there. I was a musician first, I was a bass teacher for many years and I know how to be technical. I think that led itself to me being technically oriented and that led itself to do all kinds of things. Getting me known … to open doors to where you can really go in and do good work, bang out a few songs in one day and people appreciated that. Working with Jagger, and Ozzy was through connections and again it was great to work with guys like that and see and learn how they operate in the studio. Scott Wieland was through a friend back in New York. We did Time of the Season on the Austin Powers Soundtrack. That was a few years back but in between all that, after the Metallica audition, (the band went with Robert Trujillo) Kirk Hammett really liked my playing and wanted to recommend me for the Ozzy gig once Robert came over to Metallica. I missed out on the gig the first time but a bit later on when I was playing with Jerry Cantrell, the opportunity to play with Ozzy came back around through Mike Bordin, who was playing drums with both Jerry and Ozzy at the time and recommended me.

These must be the weirdest phone calls to get! Amazing, yet weird to be asked by Kirk Hammett if you want him to call and recommend you for Ozzy’s band! Continue reading
