NAMM 2014 signings and around the show

I would like to start off by saying thank you to everyone that came to the booth to sign Richie Ramone, David Ellefson, Angelo Moore, Doyle, Rhoads family (Kelle and Kathy), Matt Starr, Bjorn Englan, One Hundred Proof, Static Fiction, The Chimpz, Spades and Blades, All Else Fails, Dante’s Boneyard, Mest, Assuming we Survive, The Slow Forward, Low Life Music, NME, Loards of Ruin, Inside Riot, Mr. Creepy, XNO, Reveille for Radicals, Toshi, Archer, Chad Lee, Zloz, Great White, Rafael Moreira, John Force and Robert Hight. And those of you that stopped by to take pictures and say hi it was another great year! We got to be a part of many great shows that are featured in their own post on here and more info will be able to be found in issue 11.

NAMM 2014 is in the books now. This year, it was a different kind of “busy”. Amongst the many faces and known names in the music industry, I would like to thank Laura “LV” Victoria (Also from L.A. Velvet), Grammy-nominated guitarist Sin Quirin (Ministry/RevCo), Metal Sanaz, Sick Puppies’ Mark Goodwin, Emma Anzai and Manager Paul Stepanek, Jinxx (Black Veil Brides), Johnny Christ and Synister Gates (Avenged Sevenfold) for their few minutes of attention and time and towards my self and the crew, as fan and photo journalist while roaming around and looking for the interesting stories to bring them to you, our RNRI friends.
Now, speaking of products, I had a very limited schedule, so skipping the big names and visiting other booths and halls that are usually overlooked, I do want to mention a couple that got my attention. One of them being OGRE guitars and Thunderclap Distortion (Demon-like shape) and Tubeaholic Overdrive (Alien-looking ) pedals. Interesting designs, aluminum die casting, eyes that light up when activated and different options in colors sure make me want to try these babies live soon. In my very particular opinion, their guitars are heavy yet unique and maybe even resemble H.R. Giger’s style.
The other show stopper was Bohemian Guitars. Each (body) made with a vintage oil can or lunch box and the rest of the hardware and other assorted parts are saved from used materials. Now, if this doesn’t scream “GREEN” then I don’t know what else it does. I couldn’t really believe they would be taken seriously until an spectator came by during my time visiting the booth and played some Hendrix music. I guess rocking out can also be good for the environment.
During an interview with Laura Victoria at the DBZ booth, their guitars there winked at me in a very sexy way, almost seducing. The Bolero, Renegade, Bird of Prey and my favorite one, the Red stripes Hailfire.I must, MUST further test and perhaps acquire one for my collection.
And last but not least, the people at MonoPrice offering very affordable musical equipment, amps, pedal tuners, etc. I got to try an $89 Stratocaster, at these prices and let me tell you, don’t let the “Under a Benjamin price” fool you and think you can’t have fun with such guitar.
Now, these are just a couple of outstanding memories, like I said, skipping the bigger names and most visited booths. Thank you for making NAMM 2014 memorable, yet again. Rock and Roll!

MOLTEN METAL: Mayhem in San Bernardino, CA

My favorite time of the year, the annual MayhemFest, kicked off its 6th tour in San Bernardino on June 29th, 2013. What better way to spend a scorching hot summer day than with thousands of sweaty metalheads in the dirt and completely unleash the beast within!  This year’s lineup was extra HEAVY! I caught full sets of BattleCross, Son of Osirus, Machine Head, and Children of Bodom on both the Jagermeister stage and the Musician Institute stage. I also caught a few songs from Job For a Cowboy‘s set, which I enjoyed tremendously. My green VIP wrist band gave me access backstage, where I ran into a few of my favorite metal dudes. Right before Machine Head was to hit the stage, I saw Phil Demmel and we started talking.  All of a sudden, Jason Hook of Five Finger Death Punch rides up on a green dirt bike. I stopped him and asked him to join us in a photo-op and he was down!  Totally surreal and way cool of him! Everyone was in a good mood despite the heat!  Machine Head really killed it with a powerful performance and killer stage set up. I was rocking out on stage with them, looking out at the sea of metalheads crowd surfing to the almighty Rob Flynn.  The crowd surfing was out of control!  I have never seen so many girls crowd surf at a metal show.  Everyone was going nuts, but at the same time making sure no one was getting hurt.  Backstage, I ran into Mike Faley of Metal Blade Records. He was keeping cool in a seat in the shade.  I told him how sick BatterCross’s performance was and he agreed!  In a previous interview I had with Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records, he mentioned how much he liked BattleCross and to keep a look out for them this summer. He was right, I was blown away. I bought a CD and a T-shirt form the lead singer, Kyle “Gumby” Gunther and had the band sign it! I am digging the new BattleCross album “War of Will.”   It’s intense!  Another band I’ve never seen live that I am now totally into is Born of Osiris! Pretty powerful how they mix in beats and keyboard! Children of Bodom played last on the Music Institute Stage. Alexi Laiho can do no wrong. He is the ultimate shredder! Continue reading

Doyle: Abominator! Private listening party with Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein!

Doyle: Abominator!

Private listening party with Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein at Doggy Style Productions (Snoop Dogg’s recording studio)

May 10, 2013 was no ordinary day.  Let’s backtrack to how it all started. A week ago, I attended the Golden Gods Awards (as you might have read). I was backstage, watching the all mighty Danzig unleash his fury for the crowd of raging metalheads. After sparking up a conversation with a long dreaded dude , I mentioned that I write for RNR Magazine.  Well good thing I did, because he told me that Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, the legendary Misfits guitarist, was putting out his own album and producing it himself! I was like “WHAT! Awesome! Now that is a story I must tell!” He took my business card and said he would pass it along to Doyle! Continue reading

Rock N Roll Industries Backstage pass to the 5th Annual Golden Gods Awards 2013

On May 2, 2013 the Golden Gods Awards took place at Club Nokia, celebrating its 5th year as one of the heaviest award shows to ever take place this side of the abyss, and I had a backstage pass to witness and experience it all! The night was filled with surprises, and special tributes, paying homage to the late Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who passed away earlier that morning.  May you shred in peace Jeff.  After collecting my credentials, I headed straight to the action, the VIP lounge. Depending on what badge you received, a really sick gift bag provided by Affliction Clothing was there to greet you as you walked in to Golden God Heaven.  In my bag was some seriously sick gear!  Just to name a few treats, there was a Metallica documentary, Black Sabbath and Slpiknot  DVD in Blue Ray, a Samson Tuner (that I will totally use on my guitar), limited edition headphones by Orange Amplification, and guitar strings, which you can never have too much of!

30th Annual Memorial for Randy Rhoads

Click photos several times to view full-size.

The March 19th, 2012 Randy Rhoads Celebration was a day of mixed emotions. It marked the thirtieth year since the guitar legend lost his life in a plane accident in Leesburg, Florida, along with fifty eight-year-old makeup artist Rachel Youngblood and pilot/bus driver Andrew Aycock, who was thirty six. The story shocked his growing international fanbase, and many Rock lovers still clearly recall hearing the unthinkable news.

He may have never known it, but Randy Rhoads was as loved as he was exceptionally talented. Though he would only ever put out two albums each with OZZY and QUIET RIOT (the latter of which he founded), and though he’s been “gone” for three decades, so many of the Memorial attendees were people who weren’t even alive in the same window of time as Randy! That in itself is very impressive, and accounts for his incredible star power. He has inspired many people not just from his own generation, but all those after. Continue reading
