August 2, 2016 — Twisted Sister’s highly anticipated DVD release, TWISTED SISTER: METAL MELTDOWN LIVE AT THE HARD ROCK CASINO LAS VEGAS – A CONCERT TO HONOR A.J. PERO, has debuted at #1 on Billboard’s “Music Video Sales” chart.
Released July 22 via Loud & Proud Records in association with Rock Fuel Media and directed by Brian Lockwood (Bon Jovi, Metallica, Motley Crue), the retail package includes both Blu-ray and DVD formats as well as an audio CD. TWISTED SISTER: METAL MELTDOWN LIVE AT THE HARD ROCK CASINO LAS VEGAS – A CONCERT TO HONOR A.J. PERO features a complete concert filmed at The Joint at the world famous Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas on May 30, 2015 as part of the kick-off to the first “Metal Meltdown” concert series, as well as Rockshow, a bonus documentary that takes fans through the band’s 40-year ride from local club outcasts to world domination with exclusive interviews, archive footage from the ‘80s, photo gallery. It was mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound. A trailer can be seen here.
Legendary, multi-Platinum selling rockers Twisted Sister performed an explosive 90-minute concert of their biggest hits spanning their 40-year career. The show was dedicated to the honor of Twisted Sister’s iconic drummer, A.J. Pero, whose tragic, sudden death just two months prior to the filming of this event shocked the music world. The band announced that not only were all the remaining concerts being performed in 2015 dedicated to the memory of A.J. Pero, but that 2016 would mark the 40th and final year of the band’s legendary live performances. They recruited renowned drummer and friend of A.J. Pero, Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold) to take the reins, and his very first Twisted Sister appearance was captured by the “Metal Meltdown” camera crew.
“This concert was performed in memory of our late drummer A.J. Pero,” says frontman Dee Snider. “To have it enter the Billboard charts at number one is further tribute to him. RIP A.J. Pero.”
As Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French continues, “It’s amazing to have the memory of A.J. Pero honored with a Number One entry onto the Billboard charts and recognized with such a magnificent concert tribute. We can’t thank Mike Portnoy enough for his talent, support and sheer professionalism in stepping into such an important role and displaying such a love for A.J.’s history and the musical foundation that A.J. helped create and which the band has been built upon.”
While bassist Mark Mendoza exclaims, “”It’s about freakin’ time!”
“It’s truly an honor to have A.J. remembered an honored by this DVD concert debuting at number one,” concludes guitarist Eddie Ojeda. “I’m sure he’s up there smiling down on everyone.”

UnBlackened: Black Label Society at the Grove of Anaheim

The Grove of Anaheim was the last stop on the “UnBlackened” tour by the almighty Black Label Society, fronted by the ultimate shredder Zakk Wylde. I was lucky enough to catch Zakk play a tribute song to Dime Bag Darrell at last year’s Golden God Awards, but hearing the whole band play an acoustic set is a whole other experience.

I am so glad they decided to make their one night only concert at Club Nokia Live DVD and CD in Los Angeles, a US tour. With their album “Catacombs of the Black Vatican” that was released last April, they added a new member to the family. Dario Lorina formally of Lizzy Bordan, is the new axe-slinger for BLS replacing long time guitarist Nick Catanese. When Zakk introduced each of the band members, he said that Dario not only kills it on the guitar, but he also makes a tasty chicken piccata! Still in the band is brother John (JD) DeServio on bass and Jeff Fabb on drums.

I arrived to the ceremony right in time for the black curtain to drop. A space was saved for me in the front of the barricade so I could see the whole show for the next two hours. The band opened with Losin’ Your Mind and the crowd did just that! The set list consisted of songs from Zakk’s solo album Book of Shadows and Southern rock band Pride & Glory. Acoustic shows are so much more intimate with the audience because you can actually hear the melodies of the songs and the emotions of the band.

Zakk always gives it his all but I felt he really put in the energy for the last show of the tour. Throughout the set he threw in long guitar solos while he and Dario kept switching back and forth from the piano to the guitar. Both piano driven tunes “In This River” and “Angel of Mercy” were two of my favorite highlights of the night. I would catch Zakk looking over at Dario with eyes of respect because Dario was holding it down on both the keys and the strings! Zakk pulled some of his famous moves and played the guitar behind his head a few times and with his teeth! Zakk pulled out the double neck Les Paul signature “bullseye” guitar and gave a truly epic performance and somewhere in the middle of the set he played a tribute to Dime Bag Darrel who as a really close friend of Zakk’s. The crowd held up their cell phones like lighters and sang along. It was a beautiful and touching moment and I really liked that he took the time to give his respect to not only his friend, but a talented musician that was taken away from us way too soon in life.

The set went by way too fast and before you knew it, the show was over. Zakk took the time to thank his fans and throw some memorabilia out into the crowd. I was up front and I saw Zakk wipe his face with a black towel and then he threw it right at me! I caught it and of course I kept it. Weird, I know, but hey it was a pretty cool moment. I must have been in the perfect spot because I also caught his guitar pic, what an epic night indeed!

Dead End Sky: The Sky is the Limit!

Recently I went to a show at Loaded in Hollywood to see the hard rock band Dead End Sky. The show was awesome! I really enjoyed watching this band on stage! They sounded great and played really well together! So far they have played four shows, three in LA and one in Vegas. I had the opportunity to sit down with Kyle Zamanek,  lead singer of Dead End Sky, to get the low down of the bands roots and  to find out what makes them unique and where they are headed.  Dead End Sky is definitely a band I recommend checking out!

RNR: When did Dead End Sky form? How would you describe your music?

Kyle: We formed in early 2013.  I would classify our music as Modern Hard Rock.

RNR: Who are your influences?

Kyle: There are so many, it would take a lot of print to name them all.   Many genres & bands influence our sound.  Classic rock like The Beatles & Pink Floyd to 90’s Alt/Grunge like Alice In Chains & Oasis to Modern Rock bands like Seether & Shinedown to metal like Pantera & Machine Head to pop like Adele & Christina Perri to Folk/Singer-Songwriters like The Civil Wars & Simon and Garfunkel.  I could go on & on.

RNR: What makes your band unique?

Kyle: Instead of being conformed to one type of sound, we try to spread the style around a bit.  Some bands kick major ass, but if you listen to the album from front to back, it stays in the same style of writing.  I would never want limitations to be imposed on our creativity by our fan base.  I’m not saying we’ll ever be as eclectic as, say, Mr. Bungle, but you get the idea.  One song might have a more metal vibe while another has a more bluesy vibe.

RNR: If you could play in any festival which would it be and why?

Kyle: I would love to play in one of the big European festivals like Download or Rock am Ring.  I love the diversity of the lineups and obviously the crowds are massive.

RNR: How is your first album coming along?

Kyle: Most of it is completed but we’ve got to tie up some loose ends.  There’s also a couple of new songs we want included so we’re working on that as well.

RNR: What do you want RNR readers to know about Dead End Sky?

Kyle: We’re a new kickass rock band!  If you’re in the Southwest Region, find us on our various social media outlets and come check a show out.

MOLTEN METAL: Mayhem in San Bernardino, CA

My favorite time of the year, the annual MayhemFest, kicked off its 6th tour in San Bernardino on June 29th, 2013. What better way to spend a scorching hot summer day than with thousands of sweaty metalheads in the dirt and completely unleash the beast within!  This year’s lineup was extra HEAVY! I caught full sets of BattleCross, Son of Osirus, Machine Head, and Children of Bodom on both the Jagermeister stage and the Musician Institute stage. I also caught a few songs from Job For a Cowboy‘s set, which I enjoyed tremendously. My green VIP wrist band gave me access backstage, where I ran into a few of my favorite metal dudes. Right before Machine Head was to hit the stage, I saw Phil Demmel and we started talking.  All of a sudden, Jason Hook of Five Finger Death Punch rides up on a green dirt bike. I stopped him and asked him to join us in a photo-op and he was down!  Totally surreal and way cool of him! Everyone was in a good mood despite the heat!  Machine Head really killed it with a powerful performance and killer stage set up. I was rocking out on stage with them, looking out at the sea of metalheads crowd surfing to the almighty Rob Flynn.  The crowd surfing was out of control!  I have never seen so many girls crowd surf at a metal show.  Everyone was going nuts, but at the same time making sure no one was getting hurt.  Backstage, I ran into Mike Faley of Metal Blade Records. He was keeping cool in a seat in the shade.  I told him how sick BatterCross’s performance was and he agreed!  In a previous interview I had with Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records, he mentioned how much he liked BattleCross and to keep a look out for them this summer. He was right, I was blown away. I bought a CD and a T-shirt form the lead singer, Kyle “Gumby” Gunther and had the band sign it! I am digging the new BattleCross album “War of Will.”   It’s intense!  Another band I’ve never seen live that I am now totally into is Born of Osiris! Pretty powerful how they mix in beats and keyboard! Children of Bodom played last on the Music Institute Stage. Alexi Laiho can do no wrong. He is the ultimate shredder! Continue reading

Blacklodge tour dates

June 21, 2013 the up and coming band Black Lodge, out of Hollywood, CA, kicked off their US tour in Sin City Nevada! The Rock N Roll Industries crew made it a point to all go out to support one of our favorite bands.  We made a mini vacation out of it since it was Electric Daisy Carnival Weekend (EDC)!  Not that I like that DJ stuff, but what I do like is a good time, and that is exactly what a weekend in Vegas is!
