Switchfoot and Livehouse at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles 9/9

Lifehouse & Switchfoot:

Looking for Summer Tour 2017

 IMG_9393 copy

Let’s start off by saying that watching Switchfoot perform at the Greek Theatre is a complete unique experience all on its own, for this show specifically they closed the Pit off and had the  fans seated as close as possible to the stage.

If you have never been to the Greek Theatre by the Griffith Park, then you are missing out an amazing intimate event/show with any band/show you have the chance to attend. In this situation, no matter where you sit, the screens are on the sides and in front so that everyone can see. The sound engineering is loud and even on all sides, which makes everything feel like you’re closer than you really are. When you take a moment to look around, you find yourself feeling poetic as the sun (if it’s day), or moon and stars are clearly above you.

Which brings me to this- If you’re a fan of the 90’s like myself, than this event alone was a must. Two amazing alternative bands from the 90’s touring together Switchfoot and Lifehouse.

A few highlights from Sept 9

When Switchfoot came out, the crowd went wild; frontman Jon Foreman thanked the people for coming, but more importantly wanted everyone to thank the Los Angeles Fire Department  for helping us with the fire that happened  in Aug 30- Sept2 (Las Tunas Canyon all the way through Burbank).

One of my favorite songs “Live it Well,” was performed, but not before giving out a message to everyone that life is too short to not live it well. Jon then asked everyone to put their arms on the strangers next to them and to sway together. As they began to play the song,  we all began to look at each other from above the seats to the lowest, all I saw was smiles and how peaceful everyone seemed.

Jon Forman takes a moment to tell everyone that his newsfeeds have been negative recently on social media, and it was important for everyone to know that his music was to give hope. He imagined the maker up above with tears in his eyes shaking his head. With that being said, he asked everyone to turn their light on from their phones and to raise them up to the sky as they were to perform  a love song. “I Won’t Let You Go.”

IMG_4399

For their next song, they brought out Jason Wade from Lifehouse to sing along to their last song “Dare You to Move.” Everyone was heard singing along, and screaming in excitement. This was such an amazing show, and will most likely be talked about for times to come. It’s amazing how much heart and passion can be seen as they play live.

They ended their show thanking everyone that donated to SHINE LIKE GOLD, and to keep spreading the word as donations are for Houston to all those who were affected by  Hurricane Harvey.

If you or anyone would like to also donate or simply share the information here is the info click on link!

To close the night, out finally came, Lifehouse! Another intense and heartfelt band from the 90’s.

IMG_9486 copy

You could hear everyone screaming naming out the musicians and jumping. As I turned around to see the people it brought me such an incredible feeling as I saw all generations in the crowd. Teenagers as well as Parents with toddlers,  couples in their 20’s – 60’s and such diverse ethnicities.

On their 3rd song, Jason Wade jumped down and performed the rest of the song in the crowd walking all the way to the center of the stage. Bryce and Steve took the opportunity to take over the stage bonding with the crowd from one side to the other. Rick on drums couldn’t stop smiling at times, how can anyone not with such a welcoming crowd. Everyone’s performance was as if they hadn’t played in a very long time, you could feel the beat of the drums to the chords of the bass or guitar. Perhaps, that’s why the 90’s impacted so many of us.

To make things even more insane after a few more songs, Bryce jumped on vocals and did one hell of an amazing cover from U2 “Pride (In the name of Love).” It all happened so fast that he in excitement got clipped on the face and bled throughout the song, a part of me wondered if Bryce even felt it. What a rockstar to pull through without even flinching or caring to notice. I will say, that it had everyone cheering him on even more, including myself!

With that being said, tonight was one for the memories!

Three & a Half Decades of Metal Dominance: Celebrating the Career of Brian Slagel, founder & CEO of Metal Blade Records

metal blade logo

Raquel, Brian and Will

In 1982, I was wearing diapers and Brian Slagel was just starting his empire from the inside of his mom’s garage that is now Metal Blade Records;  the home of Metallica, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, and GWAR, just to name a few. His long list of successful bands comes from his dedication and love for metal. He started off as a music journalist, and created the first heavy-metal fanzine in the USA, The Heavy Metal Revue. Years later, Brian would create Metal Massacre compilation album, which would forever change his life and the history of metal.  Metal Massacre showcased both LA and OC heavy hitting bands like Ratt, Bitch, Metallica and Slayer. Brian was the first to bring attention to metal in America, and he says in his book that Orange County had a lot to do with it! Fast forward to today, what better place to host the 35th Anniversary party than the home of the Metal Ambassador Jose Mangin at the Affliction Headquarters in Seal Beach, CA. It was the perfect setting for rockers, musicians, fans and media in attendance who were all there to pay homage to the man of the hour, Brian Slagel.

On August 25th,  there was music, games and an open bar.  Modelo and “Satan’s Jizz,” Jose Mangin’s personal concoction, was being served freely and for those who felt brave enough to step into the “Triva Pit,” Jose Mangin put three teams of two against each other to answer Metal Blade trivia questions. Here are some fun questions that were asked:

Q: Which member of Cannibal Corpse is a World of War Craft enthusiast?

A: George Corpse Grinder Fisher.

Q:  Who filled in for Gary Holt when he had to sit out of the European tour in 2011?

A: Pat O’ Brien of Cannibal Corpse.

Q: Who played lead guitar in Metallica’s “Hit the Lights” demo?

A:  Lloyd Grant… and he is here tonight!

The song Hit the Lights started playing and Lloyd got on stage with Jose. The crowd was cheering and for a moment the crowd stopped their banter to realize what a special moment it was to have Lloyd present in the celebration. When Jose asked Lloyd, “If he wanted anything,” Lloyd answered, “Another beer.”

The time had finally come for some live heavy metal, but before Armored Saint could take the stage, Jose took a moment to give Slagel the credit he deserves.  Jose said, “On behalf of the world, thank you dude for not selling out, and selling your label and making a bunch of money and saying fuck you.” He added, “What I loved about Brian is he goes to shows all the fucking time, and he wears the band’s uniform everywhere he goes. He travels, he remains humble, powerful and always supporting the metal.” That was the cue for Armored Saint to go straight into their set playing a cover song by Judas Priest, ‘Never Satisfied.’ (See set list below). A small stage did not stop Armored Saint from electrifying their fans with their energy and professionalism. They made the place feel like a house party and they rocked the roof off!  They played ‘For the Sake of Heaviness’ which was a highlight of the night since it is also the title of Slagel’s new book. It was a historic night and I am honored that my RNR crew and myself were there to be a part of metal history.

Set List :
1. Never Satisfied (Judas Priest cover)
2. N.I.B. (Black Sabbath cover)
3. For the Sake of Heaviness
4.Reign Of Fire
5. Day of the Eagle (Robin Trower cover)
6. Win Hands Down
7. Riff Raff (AC/DC cover)

If you can’t get enough of Metal Blade, listen to Liquid Metal on SiriusXM all week  until Friday, September 1st @ Midnight ET / 9pm PT), For The Sake Of Heaviness- Metal Blade Records 35th Anniversary Week, Brian Slagel will be introducing his favorite jams from his label. On October 2nd at Book Soup on Sunset Blvd,  join Brian and a few of his metal elites: Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, John Bush, Joey Vera, Lizzy Borden, Betsy Bitch in a discussion panel and signing For The Sake of Heaviness: The History of Metal Blade Records. I’ll be there with my copy of his book for everyone to sign!

HATEBREED ARE CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF “DESIRE” AND 15 YEARS OF “PERSEVERANCE” WITH FALL HEADLINE TOUR

unnamed-31

Unstoppable, Grammy-nominated hardcore juggernaut Hatebreed released their first full-length, the modern hardcore classic Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire, back in November of 1997. The album set the tone for the type of moshable metal that would eventually go on to define the ’00s.
2002’s Perseverance was a perfectly executed, packed-with-anthems follow up that has become emblematic of the era. In fact, the album’s iconic and lyrically uplifting track, “I Will Be Heard,” has become the band’s signature battle cry, securing its place as the quintessential, fist-in-the-air chant of the new millennium, thanks to a call-to-action that starts with “Now is the time for me to rise to my feet…”
In the 20 years since their definitive debut, Hatebreed have rightfully earned their status as hardcore legends. They’ve remained road warriors, touring constantly and reducing venues to pile of rubble and ash while sharing stages with everyone from Slipknot to Slayer and serving as one of the top-tier headliners on multiple festivals, from Ozzfest to Mayhem to Warped Tour.
The band will embark on a headline tour this fall, celebrating the 20 years of Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire and the 15 years of Perseverance by playing a majority of songs from both albums, along with other fan favorites from across the entire Hatebreed catalogue.
Support for the tour is confirmed and will be announced in early September.
Hatebreed singer Jamey Jasta added, “Sometimes it’s good to look back just to see how far you’ve come. There’s about four-five songs off of Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire and about six or seven off of Perseverance that we rarely play, so we’ve hit the rehearsal room and dusted off a killer batch of songs and deep cuts that we’ll blast your eardrums with this fall. Come celebrate not one but two anniversaries with us!”

Springfield, MA | August 3, 2017 – With eight studio albums under their belt, Massachusetts-based hard rock juggernauts All That Remains show no signs of slowing down. Their album “Madness” dropped on April 28th via Razor & Tie Records to an overwhelmingly positive response hitting #1 US Top Hard Rock Albums and #9 US Top Rock Albums charts. The band has already toured heavily in support of the project, hitting major summer festivals like Carolina Rebellion and Montebello Rockfest, among others. They also hit the road on a headlining run, catching up with a few friends including Five Finger Death Punch, Killswitch Engage, and Motionless in White. The band still has a few announced performance dates left and will continue touring throughout the remainder of 2017, look for new tour info coming soon.

In the meantime they’re keeping things moving, today All That Remains has given new life to an unexpected cover of Garth Brooks hit single “Thunder Rolls.” Their take on the Country star’s award-winning tune, (one of singer Phil Labonte‘s favorites) is compelling, reworking the song in an epic way and making it their own. In an interview with Billboard, Labonte discussed the unexpected cover choice, sharing, “We’re continuing to push what people’s notion of what All That Remains is and what we’re allowed to do and what we’re willing to do, in what ways we’re willing to go and experiment… That’s always our point — How can we reach out to new people?”

No Resolve, check out this band from Detroit Rock City!

No Resolve

Since exploding on to the music scene in 2009, No Resolve has attracted legions of devoted fans with their high-energy, deeply personal, thematic songs. This five piece band from Detroit, Michigan features Oscar Pegorraro– frontman, guitarists- Jason Hatmaker and Matty Shea, bassist-Dennis Patterson and Derek Bjornson-drummer.

Since the release of No Resolve’s EP “A New Beginning” and single “Get Me Out” in 2012 they have received millions of hits across multiple streaming services, playing shows with bands such as Trapt, and Devour The Day and bigger hometown shows with the likes of Papa Roach, Buckcherry and Hinder.

When No Resolve decided it was time to start recording more music, they found the songs they’d written shared some emotional states and narrative threads of love, anger, pain and communication between lovers and enemies both real and imagined. These songs complete the album “Unity” a diverse collection of hard hitting, modern rock explorations, the recording of which was entirely self funded by No Resolve. The band took a no shortcuts approach by writing their two debut singles “The Pusher” and “Love Me To Death” with veteran songwriter Johnny Andrews who has wrote with Three Days Grace, Starset and records drums in the world famous Blackbird Studio. Musically, No Resolve both polished and expanded their approach, retaining their indignant, uplifting sound on “The Pusher” a postmodern mid-tempo statement with a dark message and “Love Me To Death” a major key whirlwind which calls to mind Three Days Grace and Shinedown. “What You Deserve” one of the last songs to be written and shows the bands songwriting capabilities with a melodic twist of high energy and a deeper meaning in this modern rock anthem of betrayal, all in the course of four minutes. In scope, palette and composition “Unity” is a more daring and successful leap for a band that already kickstarted their career with a promising debut.

Upon release “Unity” has landed the #10 spot on Billboard Heatseekers (East North Central,) #45 on the iTunes rock charts, and was featured on Amazon under the “Hot New Release” list. Also recently No Resolve won the prestigious Stagelight Monthly Music Contest hosted by Linkin Park.

Unity” was released January 6th, 2017

Otherwise Back in Action with New album “Sleeping Lions”

unnamed-27

Las Vegas-based Hard Rock outfit OTHERWISE have triumphantly returned with the most visceral offering of their storied career. You’d be hard pressed to find a more fitting album title than Sleeping Lions for the band’s third full-length studio release. The album hits like a revelation, jolting the listener upright and transporting them from a dreamy landscape to a wide-eyed state of consciousness textured by humility and sandblasted by the winds that weather life. Sleeping Lions is set for a September 22nd release on Century Media.

Two of the new disc’s most impactful songs are “Angry Heart” and “Close To The Gods,” which are both available to stream now at the links below. Stay tuned to https://www.facebook.com/otherwiseofficial for all news updates and tour information.

Adrian Patrick (vocals) states: “The initial spark for ‘Angry Heart’ took place on a cross-country flight from New York to L.A. I was watching UFC on the in-flight entertainment and the fighter, Cyborg, was giving an interview in which she basically said, ‘I am a pretty nice person outside of the ring. I don’t know why I fight with such an angry heart.’ Upon landing on the west-coast, I told my brother about what she said and the lyrics just flowed out of me, like a molten poem of rage. For whatever reason, be it how our father raised us to fight for what we believe in, we completely related to Cyborg’s statement.

“Personally, I’ve always felt like I was waging some kind of spiritual war, but I didn’t know why, until my sons were born. Those two beautiful boys have utterly redefined the ‘good fight’ for me. Anger is a gift, if utilized properly, and we plan to somehow make the world a slightly better place by using that righteous fire for positive goals.”

Patrick further adds: “The track,‘Close To The Gods,’ is a reluctant acknowledgement of our own mortality. We’ve reached some of the pinnacles of worldly achievement; personally, professionally and physically, only to see them succumb to the trappings of human frailty. But by leaving this song, for future generations, as a monument to the blessings that true grit and perseverance can garner in this realm, we hope to enjoy even just a taste of immortality in the next.”

One can confidently call Sleeping Lions the most mature chapter of OTHERWISE’s impressive volume of work, but don’t mistake mature for soft in the middle. Quite the contrary, the band’s evolution is poignant both musically and lyrically, and they steer clear of the awkward growing pains that so many other bands endure. If you’re going to search the darkness for answers, these Sleeping Lions make the perfect guide.

RIGHTEOUS VENDETTA unveil new music!

unnamed-25

Wyoming-based Metalcore outfit RIGHTEOUS VENDETTA have unveiled a new music video for their song “Weight Of The World”. The video debuted yesterday on Alternative Press and is for the current single off the band’s new album, Cursed, which dropped back in March on Century Media. Speaking about the concept behind both the song and the video, the members of RV comment:

“‘Weight Of The World’ is an anthem that we feel a lot of people can relate to. No matter what your situation is, everyone has times where they do their best to keep it all together, but everything seems like it’s crashing around them. We wanted to portray that tension visually, and Orie and the Enlighten Creative team really helped us achieve that. We all meshed and had the same goal to create the vibe that would allow the listener to feel that much more connected with the song.”

Fans can also see RIGHTEOUS VENDETTA performing at Riff Fest in Clarkston, Michigan on September 29th alongside Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Halestorm, Pop Evil, Fozzy and many others!

About Righteous Vendetta:
The two years Righteous Vendetta spent crafting Cursed was time well spent. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to write ‘hits’ at one point,” the band’s frontman confesses. “If you get too much into that mentality, you can start to lose yourself. So as we made Cursed, we focused on what we were when we started: a metal band. And we wrote a metal album.”

Cursed is the soundtrack to Righteous Vendetta’s overall mission statement. “We’ve always wanted to have a positive influence on people’s lives, but in a real way,” Hayes explains. “We want to connect with people, find common ground, and develop real relationships that aren’t superficial.

Introducing….. SONS OF APOLLO

Color2017WilliamHames

INTRODUCING…

 SONS OF APOLLO

FEATURING EX-MEMBERS OF DREAM THEATER, GUNS N’ ROSES AND JOURNEY

DEBUT ALBUM, ‘PSYCHOTIC SYMPHONY,’

DUE OUT OCTOBER 20th ON INSIDEOUTMUSIC/SONY MUSIC

APOLLO: The ancient Greek and Roman God of music and poetry.

SONS OF APOLLO: The new supergroup featuring members of Dream Theater, Mr. Big, Guns ‘N Roses, and Journey.

For the past few months, rumors have been circulating about a new secret project including former Dream Theater members Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian. Now, the time has come to make the grand and highly anticipated introduction to their new band, SONS OF APOLLO.

Reuniting to form SONS OF APOLLO, Portnoy and Sherinian have joined forces with Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (ex-Guns N’ Roses), Billy Sheehan (The Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, David Lee Roth) and Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Journey, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force). Their debut album, PSYCHOTIC SYMPHONY, will be released October 20 on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music. An album teaser can be seen on InsideOutMusic’s official YouTube page here: https://youtu.be/kPN2DttzlZQ

PSYCHOTIC SYMPHONY was produced by the dynamic production duo of Portnoy and Sherinian, also affectionately known as “The Del Fuvio Brothers,” which is the nickname given to them over 20 years ago during their time together in Dream Theater.

SONS OF APOLLO got together very organically, as Portnoy explains: “Derek and I reunited shortly after I left Dream Theater in 2010 and we put together an all-instrumental touring band with he and I, Billy Sheehan, and Tony MacAlpine. That was my first time working with Derek since the ‘90s when he was in Dream Theater and it was just great to be working with him again. Ever since that tour, which was really just a one-off live thing, he has been nudging me to start a real, original, full-time band. The timing just had never been right, because I had too many other things on my plate. Long story short, the time was finally right to take the bait and put together a band.”

“Mike and I work at a relentless pace in the studio,” continues Sherinian. “The music is modern, but we have an old school soul. What is unique about SONS OF APOLLO is that we have true rock n’ roll swagger along with the virtuosity– a lethal combination!”
